In a playful moment, David Beckham teased his wife, Victoria Beckham, for her previous claim of growing up in a “working-class” family. The former professional athlete shared a photo on Instagram of the couple having lunch with Victoria’s parents at The Ritz Carlton on December 31 and added a humorous caption.
David, 48, sarcastically wrote, “Just a casual New Year’s Eve lunch at The Ritz. Very working class,” accompanied by a laughing face emoji.
Victoria, 49, had made the “working class” statement in David’s documentary series, Beckham, which premiered on Netflix in October. During an interview for the show, Victoria discussed her childhood and stated, “We’re very, very working class.”
Upon hearing this from another room, David playfully intervened to challenge his wife’s description. He asked her, “Be honest. What car did your dad drive you to school in?” After some initial hesitation, Victoria eventually admitted that her parents owned a Rolls-Royce in the 1980s.
David jokingly referred to this revelation in his New Year’s Eve Instagram post, quipping, “My mother and father-in-law left [lunch] in their Rolls.”
Viewers of the Beckham documentary found it amusing to see David playfully put Victoria in her place while the cameras were rolling. The couple’s relationship was a central focus of the series as they discussed the highs and lows of their 24-year marriage.
One notable topic they addressed was a challenging period in the early 2000s when David faced allegations of an affair with Rebecca Loos. While David denied the allegations in 2004, Victoria described the experience as a “nightmare.” She admitted, “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me” in the documentary.
Meanwhile, David revealed that witnessing his wife’s pain was “incredibly difficult.” He explained, “But we’re fighters, and at the time we needed to fight for each other. We needed to fight for our family, and what we had was worth fighting for.”
Following the documentary’s release, Rebecca, now 46, stood by her story and criticized David for portraying her as a “liar” in the footage. In October, she stated, “He is making himself a victim and making me look like the liar. He’s making me look like I made up these horrible stories and that I’m the one who made Victoria suffer. Poor him. He had nothing to do with it. It’s so awful.”
